Society of International Affairs in Jönköping

Society of international Affairs (SIAJ) is a politically and religiously independent association aimed at spreading knowledge, increasing awareness and initiating debate about international affairs. We are from fall 2008 organizing a range of activities for the students at Jönköping University each semester. Some examples of the activities we are organizing are:

• Guest lectures

• Seminars and debates

• Field trips

• Movie club

• Debates, discussion groups and Study circles

Society of International Affairs was formed by a small group of economics and political science students in the beginning of 2008. The goal of starting Society of International Affairs was to meet an increasing demand amongst students for focus on, as well as debates and discussions about international affairs and politics. A dimension of Jönköping University’s international focus which the SIA founders and  many students felt was lacking.

Purpose
  • Increase interest in, spread knowledge and initiate debate about international affairs.
  • Spread knowledge about different countries and their respective culture, language, religion, political system, legal system and economy in order to increase understanding and mutual respect between different countries, cultures and peoples.
  • Discuss and inform about the foreign politics of different countries with focus on Swedish foreign policies.
  • Inform about Intergovernmental Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations of both global and regional scale.

Vision

We aim at becoming a permanent and active part of Jönköping University’s associational sphere.
We will help create a large and active platform where students with an interest in international affairs and politics can debate, discuss and further educate themselves through the various activities that we organize each semester. The result of all our activities will hopefully be a campus with a broader international focus and a broader young international political debate.

Swedish Association of International Affairs

There are Societies of International Affairs (the Swedish name is “Utrikespolitiska föreningen”) in most the major Universities in Sweden, from Umeå in the north to Malmö in the south. In the past years a national organization called Swedish Association of International  Affairs (Utrikespolitiska Förbundet Sverige) has also been formed with the purpose of supporting the different member associations in different ways as well as strengthening the co-operation between the branches. SAIA organizes a number of national projects and activities such as an international HBTQ-project, forum-weekends for the member associations
 and Foreign Policy Convention.
